Biography
German explorer Hermann Kunstler was born in Haldensleben, south of Magdeburg. He was engaged to collect plants for the Calcutta Royal Botanic Gardens on the recommendation of Sir Hugh Low, a British colonial administrator and naturalist. Kunstler began this task in Singapore in 1880, working his way through Penang, Perak, Kedah and other parts of the Malay Peninsula over the next six years. Many of his collections are labelled 'King's Collector'. He lived in Australia before and after his travels in Southeast Asia.
