Biography
American botanist and head of the botany department at Cornell University. Born in Truxton, New York, Karl Wiegand was the son of a pharmacist which may have encouraged him to take up the study of botany. After graduating from Ithaca High School he intended to study pharmacy at Cornell University, but they had recently discontinued this course and so he chose botany instead. Receiving his BSc in 1894 Wiegand became an assistant in the botany department while working towards his doctorate in plant physiology. His thesis, on frost damage to buds, awarded him a PhD in 1898 and from this time onwards he concentrated on plant taxonomy as an instructor at the university.
Leaving Cornell briefly in 1907 to work as associate professor of botany at Wellesley College, Wiegand returned in 1913 when he was made director of the newly created botany department at the College of Agriculture. Remaining at this institution for 28 years, he developed the small herbarium into a collection of over 250,000 specimens and helped botanists around the country to identify their material. Wiegand's taxonomy course was particularly popular and during his career he published over 100 papers on this subject. Some of his most important works include Key to the Genera of Woody Plants in Winter (1904) and "Synopsis of the vegetable Kingdon" for Bailey's Standard Cyclopaedia of Horticulture. Conducting field studies at Cayuga Lake, Wiegand also published Flora of the Cayuga Lake Basin with A.J. Eames in 1926.
