Biography
Bill Sykes was born in East Anglia, England, and emigrated to New Zealand to join the staff of Botany Division at what was then known as the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) in 1961. Among his publications are Contributions to the Flora of Niue and works on the flora of Norfolk Island and the Kermadec Islands. He is also a co-author of Flowering Plants of New Zealand (1990) and a contributing editor of the Flora of New Zealand.
Sykes has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in recognition of his work. A number of species are named in his honour, including Epilobium sykesii P.H.Raven, Pandanus sykesii H.St.John and Corydalis sykesii Ludlow & Stearn.
