Biography
French gardener, botanist and explorer. Pancher was based in Tahiti from 1849-1857 as 'jardinier colonial' and then as government botanist at Nouméa, New Caledonia, from 1857 to 1869. He was later employed by the Brussels horticulturist Jean Jules Linden as a plant collector in the Pacific region (from 1874-1877). Pancher discovered a large number of new plant taxa and published works including "Notice sur les bois de la Nouvelle-Calédonie" (Revue Maritime et Coloniale, 1873-1874, with H. Sebert). His collections were studied by A.T. Brongniart, J.A.A. Gris and others. Pancher died between La Foa and Moindou while working on behalf of Linden in New Caledonia. The genus Pancheria Brongn. & Gris commemorates him.
