Biography
American botanist and businessman from Rhode Island. Stephan Olney was educated in Providence and soon began to work for the counting house of Isaac B. Cooke and Co. Later his wool merchant's business took off with partner Jesse Metcalf and together they formed the Wauskuck Company. His livelihood assured Olney was able to pursue his interest in botany and became well known for his work with the genus Carex L. Collecting extensively he produced an exsiccatae in 1871-1872 and left his herbarium to Browne University, Rhode Island, with which he had much contact over the years. His published works were not extensive and he did not describe any new species, but he did produce several papers on the plants of Rhode Island and the Carices of North America.
