Biography
English businessman, botanist and entomologist who also made meteorological observations. He ran the family medical and chemical company of Allen and Hanbury (1916-1937), but was also a keen gardener and had a large collection of orchid hybrids. Country Life magazine (1927) considered Hanbury's rock garden at Brockhurst in Sussex to be '"he most remarkable garden in England". His British herbarium of 20,000 plants, including his specialist collections of Hieracium and types, was donated BM in 1938. Some 12,000 sheets of other plants native to Europe, excluding Britain and Ireland, were donated to WSY in 1936.
