Biography
Alexander Alfonsovich Grossheim (or Grossgeim) was a Ukrainian botanist, born in Lichovka. He was an expert on the flora of the Caucasus.
After obtaining his doctorate from the University of Moscow in 1912 he organised the Azerbaijan Institute of Botany, of which he served as director. From 1929 he was based at Tiflis (Tbilisi) Botanic Garden, Georgia, from which base he was able to conduct collecting expeditions in the Caucasus.
In 1946 Grossheim was appointed curator of the Caucasian Herbarium at the Komarov Botanical Institute, Leningrad (St. Petersburg), and director of the Department of Plant Systematics and Morphology at St. Petersburg University. He died the following year. At the time, he was engaged in a second edition of his Flora Kavkaza (Flora of the Caucasus, 1928-1934), which was continued by his colleague Andrej Fedorov. The genus Grossheimia Sosn. & Takht. (synonym Centaurea) was named in his honour.
