Biography
George Clifton was one of the collectors for J.D. Hooker (1817-1911) in Australia. Born in England, he was a prison officer who had served in the Royal Navy and emigrated to Western Australia in 1851. For a brief period he was a police inspector at Fremantle. In 1864 he returned returned to England becoming governor of Portland prison and then, later, of Dartmoor. Clifton corresponded with F.J.H. von Mueller (1825-1896) and donated plants to the Melbourne Botanic Garden. He sent algal material to W.H. Harvey who dedicated the first volume of Phycologica Australica to Clifton and commemorated his name with the red alga Cliftonaea Harv. Algal material sent to J.D. Hooker at K (1857-1862) was subsequently transferred to BM (c. 1961) under the Morton Agreement.
