Biography
British botanist from Chapel Allerton, Yorkshire who was educated at Cambridge University and first employed there as an assistant curator in the herbarium (1891-1897). He became an assistant at Kew (1897-1901) before moving overseas to a posting at the Indian Museum, Calcutta (1901). Burkill was later appointed director of the Singapore Botanic Garden (1912-1925) and his son, H.M. Burkill was born (1914) at the family home in the gardens. The many plant names which commemorate his contributions to botany include the algal genus Burkillia W. West & G.S. West in the Scenedesmaceae, Burkillanthus Swingle in the Rutaceae and Burkilliodendron Sastry in the Fabaceae (including the synonyms Alloburkillia Whitmore and Burkillia Ridl.).
