Biography
American linguist, teacher and bryologist from Williamstown, Massachussetts who was educated at Williams College and received an MA from Harvard Graduate College (1903) and a PhD from the University of Kiel (1908). After studying in Europe he joined Cornell University (1908) becoming Assistant Professor of German (1918), Chairman of the German Department (1924-1928) and Professor of German Philology (1931-1946). After his retirement Andrews turned to a long-standing interest in bryology, specialising in the Bryaceae. He was an Associate Editor for The Bryologist (1938-1949) and for the Revue Bryologique, edited by Pierre Allorge. He was appointed Honorary Curator of the bryological collections of the Wiegand Herbarium (CU) at Cornell.
