Biography
Dutch botanist specialising in taxonomy, pteridology and phytogeography. Maarten Christenhusz was born at Enschende in the Netherlands and studied biology at Utrecht University from 1995-2001. He took his PhD (2002-2007) at Turku University in Finland, completing the thesis "Evolutionary history and Taxonomy of Neotropical marattioid ferns: studies of an ancient lineage of plants". Following this he was employed for two years at the Natural History Museum in London as an assistant researcher working on Flora Mesoamericana, before returning to Finland to take up a post at the Museum of Natural History in Helsinki.
Christenhusz has collected plants in some 30 different countries since 2000 and has described a number of new species. His research has often focused on ferns, though not exclusively, and on island endemics and invasive species. On the latter subject, for example, he co-authored the 2008 paper "Giants invading the tropics: the oriental vessel fern, Angiopteris evecta (Marattiaceae)" (in Biological Invasions). In 2009 Christenhusz launched the plant taxonomy journal Phytotaxa. He is also an associate editor (pteridophytes) of the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society.
