Biography
American naval officer from Maryland, the son of a congressman, Ringgold joined the navy in 1819. He was appointed commander of the North Pacific Exploring Expedition (1853), a prestigious project funded by the U.S. Goverment. The five ships stopped at Simon's Bay, South Africa for seven weeks in 1853 for repairs, during which time the only African collections of the expedition were made. Most of the botanical collections were made by Charles Wright (1811-1885) but are generally attributed to 'Ringgold & Rodgers'. This landmark American expedition produced some of the founding collections of the Smithsonian Institution.
