Biography
Palaeobotanist who trained under A.C. Seward (1863-1941) at the University of Cambridge, beginning his career as a Demonstrator in Botany (1927-1934) at the same time as Harry Godwin (who studied fossil pollen in peat-bogs) until his appointment to the Chair of Botany at the University of Reading (1934). Tom Harris became Professor of Botany (1935-1968) until his retirement. He primarily studied fossil plants, particularly Jurassic floras of Yorkshire and Greenland, though he also collected extant groups with early arctic collections at BM from 1926. The botanic garden at Reading University is named 'The Harris Garden' in honour of his work at the University and his active interest in cultivated plants long into his retirement.
