Biography
Born in Sydney, Australia, Kathleen Deery de Phelps spent the best part of her life as a conservationist in Venezuela, where she collected mainly birds as well as other flora and fauna with her ornithologist husband, Willliam (Billy) Henry Phelps Jr. Married in 1941, the couple made hundreds of collecting trips, often collaborating with Billy's father, the businessman and enthusiastic ornithologist William H. Phelps, and other scientists. While the Messrs Phelps were focused on bird collecting (Kathy Phelps was reputedly an excellent bird skinner, too), Mrs Phelps was known for her botanical collecting. The plants she collected with C.B. Hitchcock on a 1947 expedition to Cerro Yavi were reported by Bassett Maguire and Tobias Lasser and deposited in the herbarium of the New York Botanical Garden. In her long career, Kathleen Phelps has written several books on the birds of Venezuela and has been an active member of numerous organisations, particularly focusing on conservation work.
