Biography
Venezuelan botanist. Francisco Delascio Chitty worked for the La Salle Foundation of Natural Sciences in 1978 and later for the National Parks Institute (INPARQUES) within the Botanical Institute of Venezuela 'Dr Tobias Lasser' of which he was director between 1987 and 1990. He is director and assessor of the Foundation Hato Piñero, created in 1990 for scientific investigation and sustainable development in the Llanos ecosystem. In 1981 he collected in the San Carlos de Rió Negro area, the confluence of Rió Pacimoni and Rió Casiquire and Santa Bárbara del Orinoco. The species Chomelia delascioi is named after him as one of its discoverers. Delascio Chitty has published extensively in a variety of botanical fields, including the plants of Cojedes (as well as one book on the ethnobotany of this state in 1978), Bolivar and Sima. He has especially focused on the palms of Venezuela and its surrounding countries and wrote a book on this subject in 1987.
