Biography
Mexican mycologist from Mexico City Laura Guzmán-Dávalos attended the National School of Biological Sciences at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) where she also worked as a research assistant and was awarded the title of biologist in 1984. Since 1983 she has worked in Jalisco as a researcher at the University of Guadalajara, in 1989 reaching level I within the National System of Researchers. Guzmán-Dávalos received a master's degree in 1994 from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and this same year she became chief of the Department of Botany and Zoology at the University of Guadalajara, a position she filled until 1998. Her research has primarily focused upon the genus Gymnopilus (Cortinariaceae), creating a monographic sketch for this group in Mexico with G. Guzmán in 1995. Guzmán-Dávalos has also worked on the genera Ganoderma and Pluteus, publishing the descriptions of new species in each of these groups. As a collector of fungal specimens she has travelled all over Mexico, much of Latin America and Europe in search of macroscopic fungi, particularly the Basidiomycetes. Since 2007 she has been the coordinator of doctoral studies in biosystematics, ecology, natural and agricultural resource management at the university in Jalisco.
