Biography
German teacher and botanist from Rostock who emigrated to South America (c. 1893). He was a teacher in Chile and latterly in Bolivia (c. 1906) where he became director of the National Museum in La Paz. Buchtien collected mainly in northern Patagonia and Peru. In 1936 he returned to Germany and died in Hagen (Westfalen). The genus Buchtenia Schltr. is named in his honour.
