Biography
British-born mountaineer and plant collector from Yorkshire. He emigrated to South Africa (1911) and settled in Cape Town. There he became a member of the Mountain Club (1913) and made many ascents of peaks in the south-western Cape. He also collecting high-altitude plant specimens mainly from the Caledon area of the Western Cape. Unfortunately his collections were rarely numbered and he often failed to document his collecting localities adequately. He was also known as a watercolour artist and lithographer. He was taken ill while climbing in the Hottentots Holland Mountains on his ninety-first birthday and died some two months later. His ashes were scattered near Stokoe's Bridge in the Kogelberg Reserve. The genus Stokoeanthus E.G.H. Oliv. in the Ericaceae was named in his honour. Many species were named after him including Amphithalea stokoei L. Bolus, Gladiolus stokoei G.J. Lewis, Klattia stokoei Guthrie (= Nivenia stokoei (Guthrie) N.E. Br.) and the probably extinct Mimetes stokoei E. Phillips & Hutch.
