Biography
Swiss botanist. Rodolphe Spichiger gained his doctorate in 1977 from the University of Geneva. His PhD research thesis, a study of the competition between dry and wet floras on the forest-savanna boundary in central Ivory Coast, was directed by the distinguished specialists of West African Botany, professors Miège and Mangenot.
Employed as a botanist at the Swiss Center of Scientific Researches in Ivory Coast in 1971, Spichiger rose to become its director in 1973, and from 1980-1987 became a member and then executive director of Geneva's Conservatory and Botanic Gardens. During these years he conducted botanical expeditions to the Ivory Coast, the Peruvian Amazon and Paraguay, and in 1983 started the international program Flora del Paraguay in collaboration with the Missouri Botanical Garden. Dr Spichiger continued to serve as director of Geneva's Botanic Gardens until his retirement in September 2007 when he was made Directeur honoraire.
A professor of biosystematics and floristics at the University of Geneva since 1988, he continues to work there and conduct researches in tropical botany, capacity building and cooperation in Africa, Madagascar and South America, as well as leading research programs in Europe's alpine regions (ethnobotany, flora of the Alps and global changes). His plant collections range from Switzerland and other parts of Europe to Peru, Paraguay and Brazil, and the Ivory Coast in Africa (where he also collected snakes). To date he has published some 250 scientific and general articles.
