Biography
American botanist. Thomas H. Nash III is professor in the School of Sciences at Arizona State University and curator of the ASU Lichen Herbarium. He came to the university in 1971 after completing MS and PhD degrees at Rutgers University. He has been an Alexander von Humboldt Scholar at the Universities of Würzburg and Kiel and the Max Plank Institute in Mainz and a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Graz. His research has concentrated on two areas: the effects of air pollution on plants and the biology of lichens. Systematic studies include a revision of the South American Xanthoparmeliae, a monograph of Hypotrachyna for Flora Neotropica, and the Greater Sonoran Desert Lichen Project, coordinated by Nash and published in three volumes, in which 92 collaborators participated in all. He is a past president of the American Bryological and Lichenological Society, a past secretary of the International Association of Lichenology, and a fellow of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science.
