Biography
Scottish surgeon from Latheron, Caithness who qualified at Aberdeen University (1847). He was engaged as surgeon on HMS Sophia, commanded by W. Penny, on an expedition (1850-1851) in search of J. Franklin and the missing ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. He was subsequently engaged on the next Franklin search expedition on Lady Franklin's private steamer Isabel (1852), commanded by Capt. E.A. Inglefield, and subsequently published on the meteorology and geology of the expedition. During both expeditions he was able to collect plants in Canada. Sutherland was later appointed government geologist and Surveyor-General of Natal (1855-1887) and collected in South Africa, including original material of Begonia sutherlandii Hook. f. and Greyia sutherlandii Hook. & Harv., which was named in his honour. Both Canadian algal material and South African phanerogams are at BM.
