Biography
German gardener who collected a wide range of plants in East Africa in 1891-1893, which were cited in A. Engler's Pflanzenwelt Ost-Afrikas under der Nachbargebiete (1895). Carl Holst was born in Flensburg in 1865 and worked as a gardener in Potsdam from 1883. In 1891 he travelled to Tanzania to work at a mission station in the Usambara Mountains, where he made significant botanical collections of more than 5,000 specimens, sent to Adolf Engler in Berlin. He died at Dar-es-Salaam in May 1894.
