Biography
Uruguayan lichenologist at the Natural History Museum of Montevideo, Héctor Osorio works as an associate researcher and has studied the lichens of Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. Born in Montevideo he has been linked with the museum since 1944, directing their department of botany between 1971 and 1998 and undertaking the role of museum sub-director (1971-1984). From 1984 until 1998 he directed the museum and it was after this period that he became a researcher there, designated by the Ministry for Education and Culture in Montevideo. In the same city he has also worked for the Universidad de la Republica, directing its Faculty of Sciences and Humanities and teaching botany between 1974 and 1985. Throughout his years as a research botanist Osorio has been dedicated to the study of lichens in Uruguay and surrounding countries. From this work he has produced over 100 publications, 35 of which cover the lichens of Uruguay, the rest the lichen flora of Brazil and Argentina as well as other themes. The most important of his publications are: "Contribution to the lichen flora of Uruguay. VII. A preliminary Catalogue" and "Contribucion a la flora liquenica del Uruguay. XXV. Liquenes publicados entre 1972 a 1991". Six species bare his name, including Jenmania osorioi Henssen and Ochrolechia osorioana Vers.
