Biography
Mexican botanist. Gutiérrez Lobatos was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, and studied in the same city, graduating form the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) in 1965. In 1963 he was involved in the initial development of the library in their Faculty of Biological Sciences and two years later he began to undertake teaching and administrative posts at the university. He has taught on many aspects of botany, including natural resources, ecology, physiology and cell biology. Between 1977 and 1983 he was head of the herbarium of the same university (UANL) and on two occasions has served as head of the Department of Botany (1980-1983 and 1994-1996). At this time Gutiérrez Lobatos continued his education, gaining masters in higher education in 1984 and in sciences in 1987. A decade later he would receive his PhD in biological sciences, specialising in botany.
Gutiérrez Lobatos' research has focused on the topics of sub-montane shrublands in Nuevo León, medicinal plants, taxonomy of flowering plants and variability within Crataegus pubescens Steud, an important Mexican crop. He has participated in congresses for aspects of botany and ecology and for the management and domestication of useful plants and he is a member of the Botanical Society of Mexico and the Society for Economic Botany. In his role as a teacher he has directed many theses, including two doctorates in education. Other administrative and educational roles undertaken include Chief of Laboratories and Representing Teacher for the Preparatory School 7 at the UANL (1966-1972) as well as teaching as a specialist professor at the Professor Moisés Sáenz Garcia School. He is currently the Director of their Graduate School.
