Biography
South African mathematician and botanist. After graduating from the University of Cape Town, he continued his studies in mathematics at Oxford University and obtained his doctorate in 1986. A Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Cape Town since 1987, he also holds a postgraduate degree in botany and works as a Research Associate at the Bolus Herbarium. He has made numerous publications in both subjects, including a monograph of Orbea and Ballyanthus, and on Stapeliads of Southern Africa and Madagascar (2005). His collections comprise some 8,000 specimens, mainly of Apocynaceae (especially Ceropegeieae, Marsdenieae), Euphorbia and Crassulaceae, and were made mainly in southern and tropical Africa, but also in Eritrea, Ethiopia, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Yemen. He is commemorated by a mumber of plant names including Aloe bruynsii P.I. Forster, Bulbine bruynsii S.A. Hammer, Euphorbia bruynsii L.C. Leach, Haworthia bruynsii M.B. Bayer (=Haworthia retusa var. bruynsii (M.B.Bayer) Halda), Gethyllis britteniae subsp. bruynsii U. Müll.-Doblies & D. Müll.-Doblies and Scopelogena bruynsii C. Klak.
