Biography
American horticulturist and plant collector based in Sarasota, Florida. Elizabeth Besse, known as Libby, began volunteering at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in 1976 and in 1981 was appointed to the board of directors. In 1988 she became a director of the International Palm Society and served later as its administrative secretary. Besse has travelled on more than 20 plant collecting trips in the tropics, in 1981 discovering the unusual red lady-slipper orchid Phragmipedium besseae Dodson & Kuhn in 1981, while leading an expedition in Peru.
