Biography
Cuban botanist at the Universidad Central Marta Abreu de las Villas, specialising in the Ochnaceae and Polygonaceae. Idelfonso Castañeda Noa was born in Sancti Spíritus and studied at the Universidad Pedagógica Felix Varela in Villa Clara where he gained his undergraduate degree in education specialising in biology. Later he was also awarded a master's degree in systematics of the higher plants from the National Botanic Garden of the University of Havana. Sub-director of the Botanic Garden of Villa Clara of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Marta Abreu university he is also a professor of botany. As a plant collector he has travelled much of central Cuba, including the northern Cordillera of Las Villas, the Sierra Alta de Agabama, the Minas de Harahueca in Sancti Spíritus, the Cayería Norte de Villa Clara and the Alturas de Trinidad as well as exploring eastern and western Cuba with many national specialists. Aside from publishing new species descriptions, such as the Ochnaceae Ouratea neuridesii I.Castañeda and regional floras Castañeda Noa has collaborated in the taxonomic revision of the Ochnaceae family for the Flora de la República de Cuba and is working towards the revision of the Polygonaceae for the same project.
