Biography
Canadian phycologist Robert Scagel served in the Department of Botany at the University of British Columbia (UBC) from 1952-1986.
While studying for his BSc and MSc at UBC (1946-1948), Scagel collected marine algae in both British Columbia and northern Washington state. He then undertook a PhD at the University of California, before returning to UBC, where he built up the phycological collection to comprise more than 67,000 specimens. In particular, the collection represents material from the western seaboard of North America.
Scagel is the author of the Guide to Common Seaweeds of British Columbia (1967) and Plant Diversity, An Evolutionary Approach (1969). Following his retirement, he was made Professor Emeritus and note devotes his time to watercolour art.
