Biography
Scottish gardener and plant collector. Purdie trained as a gardener at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh before being sent to Jamaica in 1843 by W.J. Hooker to collect seeds and plants. He thoroughly traversed the island and moved on to Colombia in 1844, where he explored the terrain for two years. In 1846 he went to Trinidad, where he was appointed government botanist and superintendent of the botanic gardens. He served here until his death. He also visited Venezuela (1851) and Puerto Rico (1854).
