Biography
German explorer and traveller from Bremen who studied medicine and natural history at Jena under E.H.P.A. Haeckel. He travelled with Haeckel to Montenegro and Dalmatia (1872). Rutenberg went to South Africa (1877) and collected in Natal and the Transvaal before travelling up the coast to Mauritius and Madagascar. He collected along the north-western coast before crossing the island to explore the unknown East coast in the vicinity of Beravi. Aged just twenty seven, he died in a massacre by the local inhabitants.
