Biography
Puerto Rican botanist. Pedro Acevedo-Rodriguez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and is a research botanist and curator at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. After graduating in 1977 from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, he obtained work as a forestry technician in the Puerto Rican branch of the United States Forest Service. He made his first numbered collections in 1980 while preparing an illustrated guide to Puerto Rican vines for the Institute of Tropical Forestry.
From 1981 to 1983 he was employed by the Department of Natural Resources as a botanist on the Puerto Rican parrot habitat study in Río Abajo Forest. He then went to the New York Botanical Garden on a Herbarium Fellowship and made a systematic study of Serjania sect. Platycoccus (Sapindaceae), which earned him a PhD from City University of New York in 1989. Since joining the NMNH in April 1989, he has maintained an active program of scientific research on the systematics and biogeography of tropical plants, specifically the neotropical members of Sapindaceae and plants of the Caribbean region.
He has prepared treatments of Sapindaceae for various floras, including the Flora of the Guianas, Flora MesoAmericana, and Flora Neotropica. His major books and monographs are The Flora of St John, US Virgin Islands (1996), Vines and Climbing Plants of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands (2005), and with Mark Strong, Monocots and Gymnosperms of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands (2005) and Catalogue of the Seed Plants of the West Indies (2008). He is a member of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, the International Association of Plant Taxonomists, the Latin American Botanical Society, the Organization for Flora Neotropicana, and the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation. He is an advisory board member for the Flora of the Guianas. He organised the Second Latin American Botanical Workshop, which was held in 1990 at the Smithsonian Institution.
His field work has taken him to Bolivia (La Paz, Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, Beni), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Parana, Santa Catarina, Espirtu Santo, Amazonas, Acre), British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Guana), US Virgin Islands (St Croix, St John, St Thomas), Colombia (Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Choco), Costa Rica, Cuba (Trinidad Mountains, Pinar del Río, and Central Cuba), Dominican Republic, Ecuador (Ibambura, Esmeraldas, and Napo Provinces), French Guiana, Guyana, Jamaica, Madagascar (Ranomafana Natural Reserve and Montagne d 'Ambre) , Mexico (Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo), Peru (Departamento of Loreto and Urubamba River), Puerto Rico, Suriname (Tumac Humac Mountains), and Venezuela (Amazonas). At all these sites he has made general Phanerogam collections as well as pursuing his interest in Sapindaceae. Several species of tropical plants have been named after him: Calyptranthes acevedoi Alain, Piptocoma acevedoi Pruski, Ageratina acevedoi H. Rob. and Salacia acevedoi Lombardi.
