Biography
Scottish clergyman from near Chryston, Lanarkshire. He was ordained in 1844 and a Minister of the Free Church of Scotland at Bothwell. He emigrated to Natal through ill-health and became a minister of the Presbyterian Church in Durban (1861-1874). He left South Africa in 1877 and was minister to the Presbyterian Church in Madeira (1878-1880), before retiring to Largs in Scotland. He made plant collections in Southern Africa and Madeira and was mainly interested in pteridopytes. Madagascan specimens attributed to him were probably collected by Sir Henry Barkly or his wife. Not to be confused with the important earlier New Zealand collector John Buchanan (1819-1898) or John Buchanan (1855-1896), who collected in Malawi, Zimbabwe and the Canary Islands.
