Biography
American botanist. Cowell was the first director of the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. Trained as a lawyer, Cowell moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1874, where he was appointed professor of forestry at the University of Buffalo before taking up the directorship of the gardens in 1894. Cowell made a number of trips to tropical America to collect living plants for the botanical gardens. His first such expedition was to Jamaica, followed by a trip to St. Kitts with Nathaniel Britton in 1901. Their herbarium specimens were divided between the New York Botanical Garden and Buffalo. The two directors also touched on St. Croix and St. Martin on this trip. In 1905 Cowell was to be found on the Isthmus of Panama, collecting plants for both New York and Buffalo from the Canal Zone, and in 1906 in Puerto Rico. In the last few years of his life he also explored Cuba and returned to Puerto Rico. He is honoured in the West Indian species Phlebotaenia cowellii Britton and Jacaranda cowellii Britton & P. Wilson.
