Biography
English coffee planter and naturalist who settled in Costa Rica in 1900. After his death the gardens were acquired through funding raised by the American Orchid Society and the Stanley Smith Foundation (UK) and, renamed the Jardín Botánico Lankester, donated to the Universidad de Costa Rica. Lankester also made collections elsewhere in south and central America and in tropical Africa. The genus Lankesterella Ames is named in honour of his contribution to knowledge of orchids.
