Biography
Northern Irish botanist and biochemist who made important collections of New Caledonian plants. He was also an active collector in Australia and New Guinea. MacKee was born at Clough and educated in Belfast. He then studied at Oxford University, where he gained his PhD. From 1936-1938 he was employed at the South African Co-operative Deciduous Fruit Exchange in London, then travelled to Australia where he gained a position in the Queensland Department of Agriculture. From 1940 he was on the staff of the Commonwealth Scientific Research Orignization (CSIRO), being seconded to the Tropical Scientific Section of the Australian Army in the Second World War. Stationed in New Guinea in the 1940s, he went on to spend 1954-1955 at the South Pacific Commission in Noumea, New Caledonia. He also made a trip back to New Guinea during this time. MacKee and his wife, Margaret E. MacKee, spent much time from the 1960s collecting in New Caledonia, particularly palms, amassing some 45,000 numbers between the 1960s and 1990s. MacKee is honoured in several plant names such as Dracophyllum mackeeanum S.Venter and the palm genus Mackeea H.E.Moore. He was co-editor of the Flore de la Nouvelle-Calédonie (published by the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris) from 1983.
