Biography
Applied botanist from Glamorgan who trained in Dublin and specialised in tropical agriculture. He was employed as an assistant at the Peredeniya Botanic Gardens in Sri Lanka (1877-1879), and later another colonial appointment as Director of the Public Gardens and the newly created botanical department in Jamaica (1879-1886). Morris left for the more prestigious post as Assistant Director at Kew (1886-1898); his post in Jamaica was taken over by William Fawcett from the Natural History Museum. Morris later returned to the West Indies, where he continued his work in developing economic resources of the region as Imperial Commissioner of Agriculture of the West lndies (1898-1908). During his working tour of the region, he published accounts of native and introduced plants of several countries and provided the earliest description of the vegetation of Belize.
