Biography
Australian professional plant collector, who collected locally before travelling to New Guinea, Java and British Honduras (Belize) (1929-1935). His privately published catalogue of plants of British Honduras provides some of the earliest records from the country and was illustrated by pressed algae. He discovered many taxa, working mainly in the coastal districts of southern British Honduras, but also collected inland on the Boundary Survey between Belize and Guatemala. He returned to Australia in 1936 due to failing health, but recovered and was later employed as a landscape gardener. The Belizean genus Schippia Burret in the Arecaceae was named in his honour. Some 1,550 specimens were purchased by BM, and additional cryptogams may have been transferred from K under the terms of the Morton Agreement after 1960. An important collection of Belizean plants was deposited in the local forestry herbarium in Belmopan (BRH).
