Biography
American botanist. John James Pipoly III is director of the Center for Tropical Plant Conservation, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and a research associate of Missouri Botanical Garden. He received his BSc in botany from Michigan State University and his M.Phil. and PhD in biology from the joint New York Botanical Garden-City University of New York program. In 1986 he became the first resident collector on the Biological Diversity of the Guiana Shield Program, run jointly by the Smithsonian, New York Botanical Garden, and the University of Guyana. After his 13 months in Guyana, he held a postdoctoral position at the National Museum of Natural History. Before his current appointment, he held successive positions at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas. His research is focused on neotropical floristics and the taxonomy and systematics of Myrsinaceae and Clusiaceae.
