Biography
Mexican botanist. Rafael Lira Saade studied biology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)'s Faculty of Sciences and gained his undergraduate degree with a thesis on the pteridological flora of the Sierra de Santa Marta in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz. He continued to study for a master's degree at the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Sobre Recursos Bióticos (INIREB), having studied the taxonomy and ethnobotany of the Curcurbitaceae of the Yucatan Peninsula. Returning to UNAM he received a PhD for his thesis on the taxonomy of the genus Sechium P.Br. (Cucurbitaceae). Lira Saade works for the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Iztacala (UNAM) as a full time professor (titular 'B'). Specialising in plant systematics, ethnobotany and phytogeography he is working on a project to study the demography of useful plants. His research has resulted in the publication of over 60 articles, 7 books and 10 book chapters and he has directed many student theses, both undergraduate and postgraduate.
