Biography
American botanist at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. John Atwood has worked as Orchid Curator and Director of the Orchid Identification Center at this institution and conducts floristic and taxonomic work into the Orchidaceae family in Central America. His publications include systematic works on epiphytic orchids and the slipper orchids (subfamily Cypripedioideae), the Orchidaceae monograph for the Flora of La Selva, Costa Rica (1986) and Orchids of Costa Rica Parts 1-3 (1989-1993). Atwood is responsible for the description of over 60 species, primarily in the family Maxillaria Ruiz and Pav.
