Biography
Swedish botanist. Andersson was Professor and Chair of Systematic Botany at Gothenburg University from 1987. His research focused on the neotropical Marantaceae and Musaceae, looking at their taxonomy, morphology and geography. Bengt Lennart Andersson (known as Lennart) was born in Alingsås and studied at Gothenburg, where he received his doctorate in systematic botany in 1978. His thesis was on the genus Ischnosiphon (Marantaceae) and he went on to analyse and reinterpret the complicated inflorescences of genera in the family, revising Thalia and Maranta and describing the new genus, Sanblasia, from Panama. He also intended to produce a monograph of the intricate and striking Heliconia genus (previously assigned to Musaceae), but the work was never completed. He did complete a major monograph on the quinine source Cinchona (Rubiaceae), published in 1998. Andersson was an indefatigable plant collector in neotropical areas and co-editor of Flora of Ecuador, founded at Gothenburg in 1973; he was the sole author of several of its volumes.
