Biography
Dutch botanist at Missouri Botanical Garden. Henk van der Werff specialises in the taxonomy of Lauraceae, especially Lauraceae from the Neotropics and Madagascar. Van der Werff studied at Utrecht University , where he gained his PhD in 1978 with a thesis on the vegetation of the Galapagos Islands. After a year working in Venezuela on the Flora of Falcon project and a period at the herbarium of the University of California at Los Angeles, he joined Missouri Botanical Garden in 1981. He is currently a curator, Deputy Director of Research and Head of the Department of Monographic Studies, as well as an associate professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. His plant collections are general with an emphasis on Lauraceae and ferns, while his only publication to deal with a non-Lauraceae subject is a synopsis of Tachigali Aubl. of northern South America. Several species are named after ven der Werff including Saracha werffii D'Arcy, Cyclopogon werffii Dodson and Geissanthus vanderwerffii Pipoly. He is a member of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists and the International Association for Plant Taxonomy and is a board member of the Flora Malesiana Foundation.
