Biography
American botanist at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco. Daniel's research interests are in the systematics and pollination biology of tropical Acanthaceae and the flora of the southwestern United States of America and Mexico. After studies at Duke University, Daniel went on to gain his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1980 where he then lectured for a year. His next post was as a curator at the Arizona State University Herbarium (1981-1985), after which he began at the California Academy of Sciences, where he is currently herbarium curator. Daniel has also occupied posts including President of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists (2001-2002) and Research Associate at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. His life's work has focused on the New World Acanthaceae, the 11th largest family of flowering plants, commonly known as shrimp plants and their relatives. He is also involved in floristic studies of western North America including a revised flora of San Francisco.
