Biography
Dutch botanist. Born in Bakkum, Netherlands, Henk Beentje studied at the Universities of Amsterdam and Wageningen (PhD), including fieldwork in Ivory Coast in 1975 and Cameroon in 1980-1981. He worked in the Netherlands on aquatic plants before going to Kenya in 1984 on a five-year contract with the National Museums at the East African Herbarium. Afterwards he worked briefly as a freelancer for IUCN and the Zanzibar Forestry Commission. Since 1991, he has been based at Kew, first on contracts and now permanently. His collections for Kew focused on Madagascar palms from 1991 to 1994, on Compositae from 1995 to 2000, and since 2001 have been general. He prepared treatments of Compositae for the Flora of Tropical East Africa, and later, in 1998, took over editorship of the Flora. Other important publications include the books Kenya Trees, Shrubs, and Lianas (1994) and Palms of Madagascar (Dransfield & Beentje, 1995); he is also involved in the production of field guides (palms, mangroves, Acacias) and conservation checklists and is a botanical editor of Systematics and Biodiversity. To date he has described 80 new species. Dypsis beentjei J. Dransf. (Arecaceae) is named after him.
