Biography
Jurij Woronow was a Russian botanist and plant collector. He was born in Tiflis (Tbilisi, Georgia) and died in Leningrad, where he worked at the Botanical Garden. He also served as director of the herbarium at the University of Tbilisi.
Among Woronow's major fieldwork were collecting expeditions in the Caucasus in 1901-1902 and between 1905 and 1919. He also travelled with Sergei Juzepczuk to Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia in 1925-1926, where they made large collections, including many plants in the Malvaceae and Sterculiaceae families.
Woronow produced "Flora Caucasica Exsiccatae" (in 15 parts, 1905-1911) and "Herbarium Florae Caucasicae", in conjunction with N.A. Busch and W.W. Markowicz. He described more than 200 new plant taxa.
More than 80 species are named in honour of Woronow, including the snowdrop species Galanthus woronowii Losinsk. and Allium woronowii Miscz. ex Grossh.
