Biography
Heinrich Willkomm was a German botanist who made two journeys to Spain and Portugal (1844-1845 and 1850-1851) to collect plants by subscription. His main herbarium from these travels is at Coimbra (COI) and his personal herbarium was deposited at Genoa (GE).
Willkomm studied medicine at the University of Leipzig and worked there until 1855, when he was appointed professor of natural history at Tharandt. He then moved to Dorpat in 1868 as professor of botany and director of the botanical garden, remaining here for five years before undertaking an expedition in the Balearic Islands. His final role was as professor of botany and director of the botanical garden at the University of Prague, where he served from 1874-1892 and continued to work following his retirement.
