Biography
Alsatian botanist, long resident in Costa Rica, who in the first two decades of the twentieth century was responsible, with Adolphe Tonduz, for collecting over two-thirds of the specimens in the national herbarium. He published little after his 1909 essay on the phytogeography of Costa Rica and died in poverty. Species named after him include Agave wercklei, Selenicereus wercklei, Scaphyglottis wercklei, and many others.
