Biography
United States botanist. Born in Jena, Germany, Dieter Wasshausen received his PhD from George Washington University for his work on the genus Aphelandra (Acanthaceae). He is currently emeritus curator and research botanist at the Smithsonian Institution where he has worked since 1969, and adjunct professor at Clemson University in South Carolina. Throughout his career he has made general botanical collections with a special emphasis on neotropical Acanthaceae and Begoniaceae; he has prepared treatments of these families for several South American floras. His recent publications include Acanthaceae of Bolivia (with J.R.I. Wood, 2004) and a chapter on "Habitat Loss: The Extreme Case of Madagascar" in Plant Conservation: A Natural History Approach (with W. Rauh, 2005). Aphelandra wasshausenii Prof⟭ce, Tetramerium wasshausenii T.F. Daniel, Vellozia wasshausenii L.B. Sm. & Ayensu and Vernonia wasshausenii S.B. Jones are some of the species that have been named after him.
