Biography
German botanist who briefly succeeded T.F.L. Nees at the University Botanical Gardens in Bonn (1839) and was given time off to join a British expedition to the river Niger. The Niger Expedition of 1841 consisted of three specially fitted-out steam-powered troopships under the command of Capt. H.D. Trotter, with orders to obtain anti-slavery treaties with the Chiefs along the river and establish a trading colony on the Niger. But little thought was given to the environmental conditions of the African interior and the expedition ended in complete failure when more than a third of the crews and civilian scientists died of malaria. Vogel died on the island of Bioko (Fernando Po) on 17 December 1841. His surviving collections were subsequently used by W.J. Hooker for his Flora Nigritiana.
