Biography
German botanist and explorer from Halle (Saale) who initially trained as a gardener. He emigrated to Brazil in 1883 and worked as a private tutor and began making botanical collections. He was appointed as a travelling naturalist at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, promoted to subdirector (1895) and later director for the botanical section of the museum. Ernst Ule undertook a major expedition to the Amazonas region of Brazil (1900-1903) and made collections in adjacent countries. He returned to Germany and settled in Berlin, from 1913 to 1914 employed as a scientific assistant at the Botanical Garden and Museum in Berlin Dahlem. His original collections were deposited at B, including exsiccatae, but the material was largely destroyed in the Second World War. Duplicate material is at many herbaria.
